Steve Brien – guitar | Paul Cutlan – reeds | Steve Arié – double bass
With a 15 year history of playing together and the unique camaraderie and respect that exists between the band members, The Sydney Jazz Trio create new levels of enthusiasm and creativity that exceeds audience expectations. Three of the most experienced and diverse improvising musicians in Australia, combine their love of standards by such greats as Cole Porter, Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Duke Ellington, with their passion for bebop and beyond, the fire of Charlie Parker, and the freedom of Charles Mingus.
The Sydney Jazz Trio creates a unique “Chamber Jazz” style, characterised by Brien’s sinuously mobile lines, the driving energy of Arié’s bass lines, the warm lyricism of Cutlan’s bass clarinet and the ommission of drums. The three combine their love of the jazz tradition and hard swinging with a freedom of interaction which is both creative and liberating.
Along with the music, the Sydney Jazz Trio presents a complete concert experience. They enjoy entertaining and communicating with the audience, relating interesting anecdotes about songs and composers, instruments, and the life of the jazz musician.
The Sydney Jazz Trio is available to perform both nationally and internationally. For further information about the band visit the Sydney Jazz Trio website. If you have any questions or enquiries please don’t hesitate to contact us.
“It was simply cool jazz – intimate music in an intimate space . It really connected with the audience. And when you leave a performance with a new sense of what the instruments can do you know you’ve been privileged to hear the finest musicians…” Geoff Robertson, Epsom House, Tasmania
